What is the difference between the two manta species?
Size and habit, mostly. Reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) are the animals you meet at cleaning stations in shallow, sheltered water. Oceanic mantas (Mobula birostris) are substantially larger, range across open ocean, and visit reef cleaning stations less predictably — which is exactly why a site that reliably produces them is worth a nine-to-thirteen-hour passage.
Both come to the same reefs for the same reason: cleaner wrasse. A cleaning station is a specific coral bommie where small fish remove parasites and dead tissue, and mantas queue for it, circling patiently. Understanding that changes how you behave in the water — you are not watching a feeding event, you are watching an appointment.

How does Manta Sandy work?
It is the most civilised manta encounter in Indonesia. Divers descend onto a sandy bottom at 5–18 m and settle behind a marked line — a physical rope or a row of stones — a set distance from the cleaning bommies. Nobody goes past it. The mantas then approach on their own terms, sometimes within a metre or two of the line, and circle for as long as they want.
That line is the whole reason the site still works. Mantas abandon stations where they are chased, and Manta Sandy has stayed productive because operators enforce the etiquette. Guides brief it firmly and they should.
Because the bommies sit at 5–18 m in generally mild current, competent snorkellers hovering at the surface see the animals clearly. And Magic Mountain?
A different animal in every sense. Magic Mountain is a submerged ridge rising to 5–10 m from much deeper water, with moderate to strong current sweeping across it. Divers work the structure, often hooking in, while mantas — both species — use the cleaning stations on the summit and along the ridge.
The current is the trade. It is what brings the plankton and the animals, and it is why the site normally requires Advanced Open Water plus recent logged dives at the guide’s discretion. It is not a site for a rusty diver on the first day of a trip.

What is the etiquette at a cleaning station?
- Stay behind the line. At Manta Sandy this is literal. At other stations it is a briefed distance.
- Never swim at a manta. If you approach, it leaves. If you wait, it comes.
- No bubbles underneath. Divers positioned below a manta blow exhaust into it and end the encounter for everyone.
- No touching, no riding, no blocking. Obvious, still necessary to say.
- Snorkellers stay at the surface and do not free-dive down onto the station.
- Flash sparingly. Wide-angle available light is better anyway.
Guides who enforce this are protecting the site rather than being officious. Stations that lose their mantas do not get them back.
When are mantas most active?
The honest answer is: when the plankton is. Mantas are filter feeders, and productive, nutrient-rich water draws them in to feed and be cleaned. That water is also less clear — so the conditions that produce the best manta encounters are rarely the conditions that produce 30 m visibility. Guests who want both are asking the ocean for a favour it does not grant.

Tide matters more than date on any given day. Manta Sandy is dived on the tide, not the timetable, which is why a fixed printed itinerary is a warning sign rather than a reassurance.
How do you build an itinerary around manta odds?
Three principles. First, give yourself repeat visits — one dive at a cleaning station is a coin flip, three across a week is a strong hand, and only a private charter lets you go back. Second, cover both encounter types if you can: shallow reliable reef mantas in the Dampier Strait, then oceanic mantas in Misool, which needs seven nights or more. Third, travel in season.
