Short answer: Cabin charter puts you aboard a luxury phinisi for roughly USD 350–1,400 per person per night instead of committing to the whole vessel at USD 2,500–22,000+ per night. You share the boat with other guests on a scheduled departure. Same vessel, same crew, same dive sites — you simply give up control of the dates and the route. For couples, solo travellers and pairs of friends, it is usually the sensible choice.
How cabin charter works
An operator publishes a season of fixed departures — typically 7-night Sorong–Sorong runs through the October–April window — and sells the cabins individually. You book one cabin, arrive on the scheduled date, and sail with ten to thirteen other guests you have not met. The vessel is the same boat that runs private charters the rest of the season, with the same dive guides and the same cruise director.

As a rule of thumb from 2025–2026 market data: a 7-night mid-range cabin lands around USD 3,500 per person, premium around USD 5,500, expedition-class around USD 7,500. Peak weeks from November to February typically carry a 15–25% uplift, and festive departures more. These are indicative ranges, not quotes.
At what group size does private become cheaper?
This is the question worth doing arithmetic on. Compare the per-head cost of a whole-boat charter against the published cabin rate on the same class of vessel.

What you give up — and what you keep
You give up: date choice, since you sail when the schedule says; route control, since the itinerary is fixed at booking; and cabin-mate choice if you are travelling solo and taking a share. You also give up the ability to say “let’s stay another day at Manta Sandy” — the cruise director balances thirteen preferences, not yours alone.
You keep: the vessel, the crew ratio (a typical luxury phinisi runs 12–20 crew for 10–14 guests, near 1:1), the same dive guides, the same food, the same tenders, and the same sites. A cabin on a good boat is not a lesser product; it is the same product, sold differently.
Singles, sharing and supplements
Most operators will pair same-gender solo travellers in a twin at no supplement, subject to availability. If you would rather not share, expect a single supplement of roughly 50–80% of the cabin rate — you are, after all, occupying a berth that would otherwise sell. Couples booking a double pay the standard per-person rate. Triple-occupancy cabins exist on some vessels and reduce the per-head cost further, at the obvious cost of space.
Ask before booking whether the departure is guaranteed. Many operators run a minimum-numbers clause and will consolidate or cancel a thin departure four to eight weeks out. A guaranteed departure is worth paying a little more for if you have booked non-refundable flights.

Marine park PIN card (IDR 700,000 foreign / IDR 425,000 Indonesian, valid twelve months from purchase); the separately reported 2026 visitor entry ticket of around IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners — confirm the current amount before travel; alcohol; dive equipment rental; nitrox where offered; flights; travel and dive insurance covering evacuation and chamber treatment; and crew gratuities, customarily USD 20–30 per guest per day, pooled among crew and guides. That is about USD 150–200 per guest for a 7-night trip.
Frequently asked questions
Will I have to share a cabin with a stranger?
Only if you are a solo traveller who opts into cabin-share to avoid the single supplement. Operators pair same-gender guests where possible. Couples and pairs always have their own cabin.
Are departures guaranteed?
Not universally. Many scheduled departures carry a minimum-numbers condition and may be consolidated onto another date if bookings fall short. Ask for the guarantee status in writing before you buy flights.
Can we upgrade to the master cabin?
Yes, subject to availability, typically at a 30–60% premium over a standard cabin. Master suites on luxury phinisi are usually the first cabins to sell for peak-season departures.
Is the diving different from a private charter?
No. The same guides run the same sites — Cape Kri, Manta Sandy, Blue Magic, Melissa’s Garden and, depending on the routing, Magic Mountain in Misool. What changes is group size in the water: expect four to six divers per guide rather than a private group of two or three.
What certification do I need?
None to join or to snorkel. Scuba requires Open Water minimum, and the high-current sites — Blue Magic, Sardine Reef, Cape Kri, Magic Mountain — normally require Advanced Open Water plus recent logged dives at the guide’s discretion. Some vessels can certify you on board; ask when booking.
Which departures are worth targeting?
October to April is the season. November to February is calmest and clearest — water 28–30 °C, visibility often 20–30 m+ — and priced accordingly.
