Short answer: Ten to twelve nights is the shortest honest way to sail Wayag, the Dampier Strait and Misool in one voyage. Raja Ampat spans roughly 250 nautical miles from the northern lagoons to the southern reserve, and at a phinisi’s 8-knot cruising speed the transits alone consume two to three overnight passages. Below ten nights you are choosing between north and south; at ten to twelve you stop choosing. Indicative all-inclusive whole-boat rates run USD 2,500–22,000+ per night by class, putting a ten-night full-archipelago voyage roughly between USD 25,000 and 220,000+ depending on vessel.
What a full-archipelago charter actually is
It is a passage-making itinerary, not an island-hopping one. You depart Sorong, run north to Kawe and Wayag, work back down through the Fam Islands and the Dampier Strait, then push south to Misool before returning. Roughly a quarter of the trip is spent under way, most of it at night while guests sleep. In exchange you dive the record-holding reefs of the Dampier Strait, stand on the Wayag viewpoint, and reach Magic Mountain in Misool — the archipelago’s most reliable site for oceanic mantas.
This suits experienced travellers, dive clubs, repeat visitors and multi-generational families with time. It does not suit anyone prone to seasickness who has not tested it, or guests who need reliable connectivity: Telkomsel coverage is largely absent around Wayag and Misool, and while many vessels now carry Starlink, it is not universal.

A twelve-night version adds a second full day at Wayag and an extra Misool day, which is where the itinerary stops feeling brisk. If you have less time, the 7-night Sorong–Sorong charter covers one region properly rather than two thinly.
Why one long trip beats two short ones
Every charter carries fixed costs that do not shrink with duration: repositioning the vessel, provisioning, port clearance, crew mobilisation, and your own long-haul flights to Sorong. Spread those across four nights and they dominate; spread them across ten and they nearly disappear into the per-night rate. There is a second, less obvious return. Ten nights lets a crew dive the same site under different tidal conditions, wait a day for the weather to lift rather than force a passage, and slot in the bird-of-paradise lek visit at dawn without sacrificing a dive. Depth of experience, not just breadth.
What the passages are really like
Expect two to three overnight legs of 9–18 hours. They are run at night deliberately, so the sea time costs you sleep rather than daylight. Motion depends on the month: October to April is the calm window, while the south-east trades from roughly May to September bring more swell, particularly in the south and on open crossings — which is when most luxury vessels reposition to Komodo and Flores anyway.
Practical advice from crews: take motion-sickness medication before the first long leg rather than after, sleep low and amidships if you are sensitive, and do not book a dive first thing after an overnight passage if you are still finding your feet. Nobody dives well tired.

Excluded: marine park PIN card (IDR 700,000 foreign / IDR 425,000 Indonesian, valid twelve months); the separately reported 2026 visitor entry ticket of around IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners — confirm the current amount; conservation contributions in the Misool reserve area, which are operator-specific; alcohol; equipment rental and nitrox; flights; travel and dive insurance; and gratuities, customarily USD 20–30 per guest per day.
Frequently asked questions
How much of a 10-night charter is spent sailing?
Roughly 25–30% of elapsed time, concentrated in two to three overnight passages of 9–18 hours each. Daylight hours are largely spent at anchor or on short repositioning hops between sites.
What are the best months for the full route?
November to March. Sea temperature sits at 28–30 °C, visibility commonly reaches 20–30 m+, and the open crossings to Wayag and Misool are at their calmest. October and April are good shoulder alternatives at lower rates.
Can we start or finish in Waisai?
Occasionally, by arrangement, but Sorong remains the practical base for provisioning, clearance and crew changes. Ask early if you have a reason — it is a planning question, not a booking-day one.
How many dives should we expect?
Typically 22–28 across ten nights, allowing for the passage days. Snorkellers get an equivalent count of surface sessions plus the land excursions.
Do we need advanced certification?
For the itinerary as a whole, no — but the signature sites do. Magic Mountain, Four Kings, Blue Magic and Cape Kri carry moderate to strong current and normally require Advanced Open Water plus recent logged dives, at the guide’s discretion. Snorkellers need no certification anywhere.
What about medical cover this far out?
Take it seriously. The nearest recompression chamber is in Sorong, with Manado as secondary referral, and evacuation from Misool or Wayag means several hours by fast boat before any chamber. Dive insurance covering evacuation and chamber treatment is strongly recommended. West Papua is also malaria-endemic; travel-health authorities advise prophylaxis and bite prevention.
