Short answer: Four nights is the practical floor and only works for the Dampier Strait. Five to seven nights adds the Fam Islands and Piaynemo. Seven to ten nights lets you add either Misool or Wayag. Ten to twelve nights covers the full archipelago north to south, and Raja Ampat plus a Triton Bay or Banda crossing needs ten to fifteen.

Why is anything under four nights hard to justify?
Because of how far away Raja Ampat is. The gateway is Domine Eduard Osok airport (SOQ) in Sorong, reached via Jakarta, Makassar or Manado, with Jakarta–Sorong alone running roughly four to six hours depending on aircraft and routing. Add an international leg and most guests spend the better part of two days each way getting there and back.
Against that, a three-night charter delivers perhaps two full diving days. The travel-to-water ratio is poor enough that guests routinely regret it. If your leave is genuinely capped, four nights in the Dampier Strait is defensible — the sites cluster within short tender runs, so you lose almost nothing to transit. Below four, you are buying travel rather than a trip.
What does each extra night actually add?
- Night four to five — the Fam Islands come into range. Melissa’s Garden at 5–25 m and a first-light climb of Piaynemo’s ~320 steps. This is the single highest-value additional night on any Raja Ampat itinerary.
- Night five to seven — either the southern crossing to Misool (9–13 hours) or the northern run to Wayag (14–18 hours) becomes possible. Both are overnight passages, so night seven is really buying a whole new region.
- Night seven to ten — the fork stops being a fork. You can have Wayag and Misool, plus proper rest days instead of a relentless four-dives-a-day schedule.
- Night ten to twelve — repeat dives on the sites you loved, weather flexibility, and the ability to sit out a squall without losing the itinerary.
That last point matters more than people expect. On a four-night trip a single bad-weather day costs you 25% of the experience. On a twelve-night trip it costs you 8% and the crew simply reorders the route.
Why does the seven-night trip force a choice?
Seven nights gives you six full days. The classic Sorong–Sorong week runs Dampier Strait, then Fam Islands and Piaynemo, then either Misool or Wayag, then Kabui Bay and Hidden Bay on the return. Misool and Wayag are roughly 200 nm apart at opposite ends of the archipelago; attempting both inside a week converts your holiday into a delivery voyage.

When does ten to twelve nights become better value?
Measured per night, a longer charter is not cheaper. Measured per experience, it usually is, because the fixed cost of getting to Sorong is amortised across more days in the water. Two seven-night trips in different years mean two sets of long-haul flights, two transfer days and two embarkation days. One twelve-night charter means one of each.
Ten to twelve nights also unlocks the itinerary that most guests describe as the definitive Raja Ampat trip: Wayag’s lagoons in the north, the Dampier Strait’s fish density in the middle, and Misool’s soft-coral walls in the south. That is what the 10-night full-archipelago charter exists for.
What about very short trips — is four nights ever right?
Yes, in three situations. First, when Raja Ampat is one leg of a longer Indonesian itinerary and you are already in the region. Second, when a group has a hard calendar constraint and would otherwise not come at all. Third, for repeat visitors who know exactly which four Dampier Strait sites they want and are content to dive them repeatedly.

How do the flights shape the plan?
Most guests fly into Sorong the day before embarkation and stay a night, because a missed connection on the day of departure means missing the boat. Airport to harbour is fifteen to thirty minutes, and private charters usually board directly from Sorong harbour by tender — you never need the two-to-three-hour Waisai ferry.
Build in a buffer night at the end too if you are diving. Standard practice is to avoid flying within the recommended surface interval after your last dive, which usually means the final day is a no-dive day and you fly the morning after disembarkation.
