Short answer: Seven nights, Sorong to Sorong, is the industry standard Raja Ampat charter because it is the shortest trip that buys the Dampier Strait, the Fam Islands and one of Misool or Wayag. Not both. Anyone selling you a week that covers the whole archipelago is quietly cutting the days into transit. Indicative all-inclusive whole-boat rates run USD 2,500–22,000+ per night by vessel class, which puts a typical week for eight to twelve guests somewhere between USD 60,000 and 150,000+ before park fees, alcohol and flights.
Why seven nights became the standard
It is arithmetic, not marketing. Each of those legs is time you are not on a reef, so it helps to know what a day on board actually looks like, hour by hour. From Sorong, the Dampier Strait is 35–55 nautical miles — 5–7 hours at a phinisi’s 8 knots. Misool is 70–100 nm, or 9–13 hours. Wayag is 110–140 nm, 14–18 hours. A seven-night trip has two of those long legs to spend: one out, one back. Spend them going south and you get Misool. Spend them going north and you get Wayag. Spend them doing both and you have bought a ferry crossing, not a charter.
Seven nights also fits the way the reefs work. Three or four days in the Dampier Strait lets a crew dive Manta Sandy on the right tide rather than the only available slot, and revisit Cape Kri in different current. That flexibility is what separates a good week from a rushed one.

The Raja Ampat marine park PIN card at IDR 700,000 for foreign visitors and IDR 425,000 for Indonesians, valid twelve months from purchase and bought online via the BLUD UPTD portal, at the BLUD office in Waisai, or at Sorong harbour. A separate visitor entry ticket has been reported from 2026 at around IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners — sources conflict, so confirm before departure. Also excluded: alcohol, equipment rental, nitrox, flights, travel and dive insurance, port clearance and village fees billed at cost, and crew gratuities, customarily USD 20–30 per guest per day, which is about USD 150–200 per guest for the week. Arrival logistics that actually matter
Fly into Domine Eduard Osok (SOQ) in Sorong — still the operating commercial airport as of 2026. Common connections are from Jakarta (CGK), Makassar (UPG) and Manado (MDC); Jakarta–Sorong is roughly four to six hours depending on aircraft and routing. Arrive the day before embarkation. Domestic delays in eastern Indonesia are routine, and a missed connection on day one costs you a night of the charter, not a night of a hotel.
The airport is 15–30 minutes from the harbour by car, and most private charters tender guests directly from Sorong, so you never need the Sorong–Waisai fast ferry (roughly twice daily, 2–3 hours). Withdraw cash in Sorong: Waisai has only a few ATMs, which regularly run out or reject foreign cards. Most nationalities enter Indonesia on a tourist Visa on Arrival or e-VOA at IDR 500,000 for 30 days, extendable once — verify on the official immigration portal, as eligibility changes.
Frequently asked questions
Is seven nights enough for Raja Ampat?
For a first visit, yes. It gives three to four days on the central reefs plus one distinct region, with time to dive sites twice. What it cannot do is cover the archipelago end to end — that needs ten to twelve nights.
Can we do Misool and Wayag in the same week?
No, not honestly. The two are separated by roughly 180–240 nm of open water with Sorong in the middle. Attempting both in seven nights means two long overnight passages plus the transits home. Our 10-night full-archipelago charter is the shortest routing that does it properly.
How many dives will we get?
Typically 16–20 across seven nights, usually three day dives plus optional night dives, minus the days lost to long passages. Snorkellers get correspondingly more surface sessions.
What happens if the weather changes the plan?
The captain reroutes, and you want a captain who will. Raja Ampat has no true dry season and conditions shift; a good crew moves the itinerary to the lee side rather than forcing a plan. Consider the published route a strong intention, not a contract.
Do we need certification?
None to join or to snorkel. Scuba needs Open Water minimum, and the high-current sites — Blue Magic, Sardine Reef, Cape Kri, Magic Mountain — normally require Advanced Open Water plus recent logged dives at the guide’s discretion.
When is the best month?
October to April, with November to February calmest and clearest — water 28–30 °C, visibility often 20–30 m+. March and April offer nearly the same conditions at shoulder pricing. Many vessels reposition to Komodo from around May to September.
Can we start or end in Waisai instead?
Sometimes, by arrangement, but it complicates crew logistics, provisioning and port clearance and rarely saves time. Sorong–Sorong remains the default for good reason.
