Manta Sandy deserves a note of its own. It is a cleaning station where reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) queue over coral bommies while cleaner wrasse work them over. Guests kneel or float behind a marked line so the animals approach on their own terms — and because the station sits at 5–18 m, snorkellers see the same show as divers. Oceanic mantas are the exception rather than the rule here; for those, you want Magic Mountain in Misool.
Who does this route suit — and who should look elsewhere?
It suits charters of four to seven nights, groups mixing certified divers with snorkellers and non-swimmers, first-time visitors to Raja Ampat, photographers who want repeat dives on the same reef in different light, and travellers with limited leave who cannot justify a ten-night passage.
It suits less well guests whose priority is the karst-lagoon landscape of Wayag — that lies 110–140 nm north and needs seven nights minimum — or the soft-coral walls and oceanic mantas of Misool, 70–100 nm south. Marine park entry — the PIN card costs IDR 700,000 for foreign visitors and IDR 425,000 for Indonesian citizens, valid twelve months. A separately levied visitor entry ticket has been reported from 2026 at around IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners; sources conflict, so confirm the current figure before departure. Also excluded: alcohol, dive equipment rental, nitrox where offered, flights, travel and dive insurance, and crew gratuities, which customarily run USD 20–30 per guest per day. When should you sail the Dampier Strait?
October to April is the prime window. Sea temperature sits at 28–30 °C in those months and 27–28 °C from May to September — a 3 mm shorty or a skin is enough year-round. Visibility typically runs 15–30 m, with 20–30 m+ common in the calm season and lower during the June–September plankton and wind period. Raja Ampat has no true dry season; rain is possible in any month, and the wetter, windier weeks cluster around May to August. Many luxury vessels reposition to Komodo and Flores between roughly May and September, which is worth knowing when you plan twelve months ahead.

How far is the Dampier Strait from Sorong?
About 35–55 nautical miles depending on which anchorage you head for, or roughly 5–7 hours at 8 knots. Most vessels sail it overnight after embarkation so guests wake up on the reef.
Can non-divers join a Dampier Strait charter?

Will we definitely see mantas?
No operator can promise wildlife. That said, Manta Sandy is a working cleaning station visited on most Dampier Strait itineraries, and reef manta encounters there are frequent through the October–April season. Crews plan the visit around slack water to improve the odds.
What certification do I need?
None to snorkel or to join the charter. Scuba requires Open Water as a minimum. Cape Kri, Blue Magic and Sardine Reef carry moderate to strong current and normally require Advanced Open Water plus recent logged dives, at the guide’s discretion.
Is four nights long enough?
For the Dampier Strait alone, yes — you will dive the headline sites and see mantas. Four nights will not reach Wayag or Misool. Our short charter page sets out honestly what each duration buys.
Is there phone signal?
Telkomsel data works around Sorong, Waisai and some Dampier Strait villages, and is patchy elsewhere. Many Indonesian liveaboards now carry Starlink for ship-wide Wi-Fi adequate for messaging and email, but it is not universal — confirm per vessel before booking.
What about health and safety?
West Papua including Raja Ampat is malaria-endemic, and travel-health authorities advise prophylaxis and bite prevention. The nearest recompression chamber is in Sorong, with Manado as the secondary referral. Dive insurance covering evacuation and chamber treatment is strongly recommended.
