Short answer: The Dampier Strait is 35–55 nm from Sorong — about 5–7 hours under way — and holds the highest fish density in Raja Ampat, including Cape Kri’s record fish count. Misool lies 70–100 nm south, roughly 9–13 hours away, and offers soft-coral walls, Boo Windows and the archipelago’s most reliable oceanic manta site at Magic Mountain. Most seven-night charters take one, not both.
What actually separates the two regions?
Distance, first. Raja Ampat is not a compact destination; it is a regency of more than 1,500 islands, and the two headline dive regions sit at opposite ends of it. At a typical phinisi cruising speed of about 8 knots, the Dampier Strait is a comfortable afternoon and evening from Sorong. Misool is an overnight passage.
Character, second. The Dampier Strait is a channel between Waigeo and Batanta where tidal flow concentrates nutrients and, with them, fish. Misool is a limestone archipelago in more open water, where soft corals blanket walls and overhangs and the animals arriving from the blue are larger.

Magic Mountain or Blue Magic — where do the mantas actually perform?
Both, differently. Blue Magic in the Dampier Strait is an open-water pinnacle topping out around 7–10 m and dropping past 30–40 m, with strong current and often a negative entry. It is an advanced dive that produces reef mantas and pelagics, and the current is the price of admission.
Magic Mountain — Karang Bayangan — in Misool is a submerged ridge running from 5–10 m down past 30–40 m with moderate to strong current, and it is Raja Ampat’s most reliable site for oceanic mantas alongside reef mantas. Oceanic mantas are substantially larger animals and the encounter is qualitatively different.

Why do most seven-night trips choose one region?
Do the arithmetic. A Sorong–Sorong week gives you six full days. Reaching Misool costs the better part of a night each way, leaving four and a half diving days — which is a good Misool trip. Trying to add Wayag, 110–140 nm in the opposite direction, adds another 14–18 hours each way and reduces everything to transit.

If both halves genuinely matter to you, the answer is not a cleverer seven-night route. It is ten to twelve nights.
Which region suits which guest?
- First-time visitors, mixed groups, families — Dampier Strait. Short transit, sites clustered within tender range, snorkelling and diving on the same reef, villages nearby.
- Experienced divers chasing big animals — Misool. Oceanic mantas, walls, and far fewer boats.
- Photographers — Misool for soft-coral wide-angle, Dampier Strait for repeat dives on the same site in changing light.

When is the overnight passage south worth accepting?
When you have at least seven nights, when you are travelling between November and April, and when your group is comfortable sleeping under way. A well-run vessel times the crossing so guests board, dine, and wake in Misool — the passage happens while you sleep. That works well in calm conditions and less well in May or June, when the southeast trades are building.
It is also worth accepting if you have already dived the Dampier Strait on a previous trip. Repeat visitors overwhelmingly head south.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see Misool and Wayag in one week?
No. They are roughly 200 nm apart at opposite ends of the archipelago. A ten- to twelve-night charter is the honest minimum for both.
Is Misool harder diving?
Not uniformly. Magic Mountain and Four Kings carry moderate to strong current and suit Advanced Open Water divers with recent logged dives; Misool’s walls and shallow soft-coral gardens are gentle and superb for snorkellers.
Which region has better visibility?
Misool generally runs clearer in the main season. Dampier Strait swings more within a single day because of tidal flow.
Do both regions charge the same park fees?
The marine park PIN card covers both. Misool sits within a reserve area where operator-specific conservation contributions may apply; those are not standardised publicly, so ask what is on your invoice.
Which is better for non-divers?
Dampier Strait, comfortably. Manta Sandy, Arborek jetty and Friwen Wall are all shallow enough for snorkellers, and villages are close by.
