Short answer: Book the Christmas and New Year weeks nine to twelve months ahead. Book the November–February peak six to nine months ahead. Shoulder months — late March, April, October — can often be secured three to six months out. And never book your Sorong flights until the charter is contractually confirmed.
Why is Raja Ampat booked so far ahead?
Because supply is genuinely finite. This is not artificial scarcity: a large share of Indonesia’s premium phinisi fleet works Raja Ampat from roughly October to April and repositions to Komodo from May to September. Within that seven-month window, the good vessels have perhaps twenty-five to thirty charter slots each, and the best weeks go first.
Peak demand runs November to February, and peak rates commonly sit 15–25% above shoulder season. The festive fortnight compounds both: highest demand, highest rates, and the earliest sell-out of the year.

What actually causes a charter to fall through?
Rarely the weather. In order of real-world frequency:
- Someone else confirmed first. Held dates are not booked dates. An option without a deposit is a courtesy, and it expires.
- Group numbers change. Two families become one, and a twelve-guest vessel no longer makes sense. Agree who is genuinely committed before you sign.
- Flights. Guests book non-refundable long-haul tickets before the charter is confirmed, then cannot move.
- Vessel changes. Refits overrun, or an owner reassigns a boat. A good operator offers an equivalent vessel; ask what happens if they cannot.
- Balance dates missed. Terms are enforced because the operator has already turned other business away.
A deposit is the mechanism that converts interest into a held date. Until it is paid, you do not have a charter — you have a conversation.
In what order should I book things?

- Choose the window. Region plus month. Reaching Misool comfortably is a November–April proposition.
- Confirm the vessel and pay the deposit. Now the dates are real.
- Book domestic flights to Sorong (SOQ), arriving at least a day before embarkation.
- Book international flights around those.
- Buy insurance — travel plus dive cover including evacuation and chamber treatment.
- Send passport details so permits can be arranged; the marine park PIN card is IDR 700,000 for foreign visitors, valid twelve months.
Doing steps 4 and 5 before step 3 is the single most expensive mistake in Raja Ampat planning. Jakarta–Sorong is a four-to-six-hour domestic sector on top of a long-haul flight; if the charter moves, so must everything else.
Which questions should I ask before signing?
- What exactly is included, and what is billed separately? Fees, alcohol and gratuities are almost always outside the rate — see what a charter really costs per guest.
- What is the cancellation and postponement policy, in writing, with dates?
- What happens if the vessel becomes unavailable? Is an equivalent substitution offered?
- Is the itinerary indicative or contractual? It should be indicative — weather and tide must govern.
- How many tenders and dive guides for our group size?
- Is Starlink or satellite connectivity available, and is it metered?
- Are permits arranged for us, and are they itemised on the invoice?
- What is the vessel’s emergency plan and oxygen provision?
Is there ever a late deal?
Occasionally, and rarely in the weeks you want. Gaps open when a group cancels, and they open most often in shoulder months rather than peak. If your dates are genuinely flexible and you can travel at short notice, it is worth registering interest with an operator and waiting. If your dates are fixed — school holidays, a milestone birthday, the festive fortnight — waiting for a deal is a strategy that mostly produces no trip at all.
