Does Raja Ampat have a dry season?
Not in the way Bali or Komodo do. The honest description is that Raja Ampat has rain all year, and what changes is the wind. Showers are possible in any month; they are usually short, warm and localised. Air temperature holds at 25–32 °C with 80–85% humidity throughout.
What actually governs a charter calendar here is sea state. From roughly May to August the southeast trades push swell across the open water south and west of the archipelago, making the long crossings to Misool uncomfortable and sometimes unworkable. From October to April those winds relax and the archipelago becomes the flat, glassy place the photographs promise.

Treat the rate band column as directional. Peak-season pricing commonly runs 15–25% above shoulder rates, and the Christmas–New Year fortnight sits above even that because the whole fleet is committed months in advance.
When do the boats leave — and why does that matter to you?
This is the part most planning guides skip. Raja Ampat and Komodo have complementary seasons, so a large share of Indonesia’s premium phinisi fleet works Raja Ampat from October to April and Komodo from May to September. The commercial consequence is simple: in June, July and August your choice of vessel in Raja Ampat is not merely expensive, it is genuinely narrow.
It also means the shoulder weeks in April–May and September–October are repositioning windows. Occasionally that produces good value on a vessel making the passage anyway. More often it means a vessel you wanted is already committed to a delivery leg. If you are flexible, ask early which boats are staying.
Which months suit Misool, and which suit Wayag?
Misool sits 70–100 nm south of Sorong, roughly 9–13 hours under way. That crossing is exposed, so Misool is a November-to-April proposition for most guests. Inside the season it is arguably the archipelago’s finest diving: soft-coral walls, Boo Windows, and Magic Mountain, the most reliable site in Raja Ampat for oceanic mantas.
Wayag lies 110–140 nm north, about 14–18 hours under way, and is less swell-exposed than the southern route but far more remote. It needs seven nights minimum and rewards October to April. What about the festive weeks?
Christmas and New Year are the single most contested fortnight of the Raja Ampat calendar. Weather-wise they are excellent: calm seas, warm water, good visibility, punctuated by short showers. Availability-wise they behave like a different market entirely, with the best vessels committed nine to twelve months ahead and premium pricing on top of peak rates. Sometimes, on a vessel that stays. Expect a Dampier Strait-focused itinerary, 15–20 m visibility and a real chance of a lumpy crossing. Most guests are better served by Komodo in July.
Is the rain a problem for a charter?
Rarely. Showers are short and warm, and diving continues. Persistent squalls occasionally shift a day’s route, which is one reason experienced crews never publish a fixed itinerary.
How far ahead should I book for peak season?
