Short answer: Telkomsel data works reasonably around Sorong, Waisai and some Dampier Strait villages, and is patchy to absent everywhere else. Wayag and Misool are effectively offline unless your vessel carries Starlink. Many mid- and high-end Indonesian liveaboards now do, and it is adequate for messaging and email — but it is not universal, so confirm it per vessel before you promise anyone you will be reachable.
Is there mobile signal in Raja Ampat?
In pockets. Telkomsel has the broadest coverage of the Indonesian networks in Papua, and around Sorong you will have normal 4G. Waisai, the regency capital, has usable service. Some Dampier Strait villages — Arborek, parts of Kri and Mansuar — catch enough signal for messaging when the wind is in the right direction, which is roughly as reliable as that sounds.
Beyond that, the archipelago is what it advertises: more than 1,500 islands spread across a remote regency with very little terrestrial infrastructure. Wayag, 110–140 nm north of Sorong, has no meaningful coverage. Misool, 70–100 nm south, has almost none.

What does Starlink on a phinisi actually deliver?
More than the old satellite systems and less than your office. In practice, a vessel with a maritime Starlink terminal supports WhatsApp messages, email with modest attachments, a short voice or video call at a quiet hour, and the ability to check a flight change. That is a substantial upgrade on being genuinely uncontactable for a week.
What it does not comfortably support is a group of twelve guests all streaming, a photographer pushing 200 GB of RAW files to the cloud, or a live video conference where you cannot afford a dropout. Bandwidth is shared across everyone aboard, and it degrades in heavy rain, which Raja Ampat has in every month of the year.
Crucially: Starlink is not standard across the fleet. It should be confirmed vessel by vessel, in writing, before you build any expectation on it.
Can I run a working trip from a charter?
You can run a lightly working trip. If you must stay reachable, three decisions make it possible:
- Choose the route accordingly. A Dampier Strait-focused itinerary keeps you closer to village signal and to Sorong than a Wayag or Misool voyage does. The Dampier Strait charter route is the most connectivity-friendly week in Raja Ampat.
- Confirm satellite in writing. Ask specifically whether the vessel carries Starlink, whether it is available to guests or crew-only, and whether it is metered.
- Set expectations before you sail. Tell your office and your family that you will check in once a day, not that you will be online. Under-promise; the sea will not cooperate with anything else.
Corporate and incentive groups often ask about this in the context of whole-boat bookings. The realistic framing is that a charter is an excellent place to be deliberately partly offline with a defined check-in window — our page on charter by group size covers how groups are configured.
Should I buy an Indonesian SIM?
Yes, if you will spend any time ashore in Sorong. A Telkomsel prepaid SIM or eSIM bought at the airport or in town costs very little and gives you working data for the pre-embarkation night, the transfer, and any village stops with coverage. Registration requires your passport. It will not help you at Wayag, but it makes the bookend days of the trip much easier.
How do I tell people I will be out of contact?
Plainly and in advance. A short message before you board — “I am at sea from the 12th to the 19th, signal is limited, I will message when I can, for emergencies contact the operator’s office” — prevents the anxious escalation that otherwise happens on day three. Give a family member the operator’s shore contact details; a good operator maintains a shore-side desk that can reach the vessel.
It is worth adding that this disconnection is, for most guests, the best part of the week. People arrive twitchy about it and leave asking whether the boat could turn the Wi-Fi off entirely next time.
What about navigation, safety and emergency comms?
Guest Wi-Fi and vessel safety communications are separate systems. A properly equipped charter vessel carries its own means of contacting shore in an emergency independent of whatever guests are using for WhatsApp. That matters here: evacuation from Misool or Wayag means several hours by fast boat before reaching Sorong, where the nearest recompression chamber is.
