Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Empowerment
Guardians of the Last Paradise
Raja Ampat is a global treasure, home to over 1,600 species of reef fish and 75% of the world’s known coral species. This delicate gift requires profound protection. At Raja Ampat Luxury Charter, sustainability is the core principle guiding every decision, with 1% of all revenue directly funding local conservation projects. We believe luxury travel must be a force for good, contributing to the environment and empowering local communities. Our commitment is integrated into every aspect of our operations, from our supply chain to our guest experiences.
Environmental Commitments
Our primary goal is to leave Raja Ampat’s ecosystem healthier than we found it. We implement strict policies, such as eliminating all single-use plastics since 2019 and utilizing onboard watermakers that produce over 3,000 liters daily to negate the need for plastic bottles.
- Marine Park Partnership: We work directly with the Raja Ampat Marine Park Authority (BLUD UPTD), ensuring all park fees directly fund conservation and patrol activities. We provide logistical support to ranger patrols whenever possible.
- Zero Single-Use Plastics: All our vessels have been free of single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags since our inception. We use onboard water filtration systems and provide guests with reusable containers.
- Reef-Safe Policies: We provide complimentary, high-quality, reef-safe sunscreen to all guests and strictly prohibit the use of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Our dive and snorkel briefings, guided by our marine biologists, emphasize passive interaction and perfect buoyancy control to protect fragile corals.
- Waste Management: All vessels are equipped with modern waste treatment systems. No waste is ever discharged at sea. All refuse is sorted and transported back to Sorong for proper disposal and recycling.
- Carbon Offsetting: We calculate the carbon footprint of every charter, including domestic flights, and invest in certified Indonesian carbon offset projects, such as the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Borneo, to ensure every journey is carbon neutral.
Community Empowerment & Social Responsibility
The people of Raja Ampat are the traditional custodians of this region. Our business model is designed for their long-term benefit, ensuring over 70% of our onboard crew are hired from local villages and that we source 80% of our fresh produce from Papuan-owned markets in Waisai.
- Local Employment: We are committed to maximizing local employment. Over 70% of our vessel crew and guides are from Eastern Indonesia, with a significant portion from Papuan communities within Raja Ampat itself. We provide extensive training to create career pathways, not just jobs.
- Local Sourcing: We prioritize purchasing fresh produce, fish, and supplies directly from local communities like Arborek and Sawinggrai, ensuring that tourism revenue flows directly to local families. This is a core part of our operational methodology.
- Community Development Fund: A percentage of the revenue from every charter is allocated to our Community Development Fund. This fund supports projects identified by the communities themselves, such as building waste management facilities, providing school supplies, or funding scholarships for promising students.
- Preservation of Culture: We facilitate respectful and authentic cultural exchanges. We support local artisans by providing a market for their traditional crafts, such as Noken bags and wood carvings, ensuring they receive 100% of the proceeds.
By choosing Raja Ampat Luxury Charter, our clients become partners in preservation. A portion of their trip cost directly covers the mandatory IDR 1,000,000 Marine Park Entry Permit, 70% of which funds conservation patrols and reef monitoring, while 30% supports community development projects.
